This bedspread has evolved from the ‘Supermarket Monster' that I made for the Dab Arts' street performance in 2007, based on the history of the Kings Road, St Leonards. The monster had the head of a manically laughing Punch (re-cycled from another project ‘Punchline') and symbolised the negative trading effects of the change in our shopping habits from using local small shops like those in the Kings Road, to supermarkets.
While the Supermarket Sanctuary bedspread gives a nod to escape into ‘retail therapy', it is within the texture of the fabrics that the story lies. The harsh insistent gaudy logos, in cold rip-stop nylon, contrast with the neutral tactile comfort of the reverse. The (fake) fur invites curled-up cosiness, comfort and the ability to hide-away; the supermarket logos embody everything that is aggressive, invasive and uncomfortable. I wanted to re-use the work I had invested in making the original piece. I am currently sloughing off my old work, giving stuff away, getting rid of things that have been stored …… for what? The invitation to place something (as a lead artist on the project) in the Seeking Sanctuary documentation of the exhibition, has allowed me to pursue this personal goal and re-work this troublesome textile of which I am unaccountably very fond. |
